A frozen drain and a frozen supply line are different failures with different consequences. A supply line is pressurised, so when ice splits it, water leaves the pipe continuously the moment it thaws. A drain line holds no pressure. Water stands in it, freezes, and blocks the line, so the first symptom you get is a sink that will not empty or a shower that backs up.
Both matter. The drain is the one people misdiagnose, because the sink backing up looks like a clog and gets treated like one. Pouring chemical drain cleaner into a frozen line does nothing except leave caustic liquid standing on top of the ice.
Here is how to tell them apart, thaw the drain without splitting it, and recognise the point where you are no longer dealing with a plumbing issue.
First: Is It Frozen, or Is It Clogged?
Four checks, in order:
- Check the temperature. If it has not been below freezing in the last 24 to 48 hours, it is a clog. Table Rock Lake winters produce hard freezes, but a mild week means look elsewhere.
- Check whether other fixtures drain. A clog is usually one fixture. A freeze usually takes out everything on the same run, and it favours whatever is on an exterior wall or over an unheated crawl space.
- Check the location. Drains in a crawl space, a garage, a basement bathroom, or anything running through an exterior wall freeze first. An interior second-floor sink almost never does.
- Listen and feel. Run the tap briefly. If water pools and does not move at all, with no gurgle, that points to ice. A partial clog usually still drains slowly. And touch the accessible pipe. A frozen section is noticeably colder than the pipe on either side of it, and sometimes shows frost on the outside.

How to Thaw a Frozen Drain Pipe
The rule that governs all of this: heat gradually, from the fixture end toward the blockage, and never apply an open flame.
What you need: a hair dryer or a heat gun on low, a space heater, towels, a bucket, and hot (not boiling) water.
Step 1. Warm the room first. Put a space heater in the room or the crawl space and let the ambient temperature come up. This alone clears a mild freeze in a few hours and carries none of the risk of direct heat.
Step 2. Find the frozen section. Follow the drain line from the fixture and feel along it. The cold section, or the frosted section, is your target. In a crawl space, check where the line passes near a vent or an uninsulated exterior wall.
Step 3. Apply heat from the fixture side, moving outward. Point the hair dryer at the pipe roughly six inches from the nozzle and keep it moving. Start at the end nearest the fixture and work toward the blockage. This matters: if you thaw the middle of a blockage first, meltwater has nowhere to escape and the pressure builds inside the pipe.
Step 4. Pour warm water down the drain in stages. Hot tap water, around 120°F. Not boiling. Boiling water hitting cold PVC can warp or crack it, and hitting a cold cast iron joint can crack that too. Pour a cup, wait, pour another.
Step 5. Add salt to the standing water. A half cup of table salt in the standing water lowers the freezing point and speeds the melt. Rock salt works. Do not use it on a line you know is metal and already corroded.
Step 6. Watch for movement, then flush. When the level starts dropping, run warm water for several minutes to clear the remaining ice out of the full run.
What not to do, ever:
- No propane torch, no blowtorch, no open flame of any kind. This is how house fires start, and drain lines run inside wall cavities packed with framing and insulation.
- No boiling water on PVC or ABS.
- No chemical drain cleaner. It does not melt ice, and you have now got a caustic pool that will splash when the line clears.
- No plunger or auger against solid ice. You will not break through, and a drain snake against ice in an older cast iron or ABS line can crack the pipe.
The Signs It Already Cracked
Ice expands about 9% by volume. In a drain line that ice has room to push, which is why drains crack less often than supply lines do. Less often is not never, and older ABS and cast iron in Branson-area crawl spaces are the usual casualties.
Watch for these as the thaw completes:
- Water appearing on the floor, on the ceiling below, or in the crawl space once the line starts flowing again
- A drain that clears and then immediately drains slowly again, which can mean the flow is escaping before it reaches the main
- A damp or musty smell near the run that was frozen
- Staining on a ceiling below an upstairs fixture
- A drop in the sound of water moving, as if it stops partway along the run
Any of those means the water is going somewhere other than the sewer line. Shut the fixture off and stop using it.
When It Is No Longer a Plumbing Problem
A plumber repairs the pipe. What a plumber does not do is deal with the water that already went into the framing, the subfloor, the insulation and the drywall.
Water inside a wall cavity or under a subfloor does not evaporate on its own in a Missouri winter with the heat running and the humidity low. It sits in the insulation, wicks into the bottom plate, and starts growing something inside roughly 24 to 48 hours. That is the window, and it is short.
The sequence that keeps a $400 plumbing repair from becoming a $6,000 restoration job:
- Stop using the fixture
- Shut off water to that section if there is any chance it is a supply line too
- Get the plumbing repaired
- Get moisture readings taken on the surrounding materials before anything gets closed back up

Preventing It Next Winter
- Insulate every drain line in a crawl space, garage or exterior wall. Foam sleeve is cheap. Do the horizontal runs, not just the visible verticals.
- Seal crawl space vents before the first hard freeze. Most Branson-area crawl space freezes come through an open vent that nobody closed in October.
- Keep the heat on at 55°F minimum in any vacant property. Lake-area second homes and vacation rentals that sit empty in January are where most of these calls come from.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls during a cold snap. Warm room air reaches the pipe.
- Run a trickle from the fixture furthest along the line. Moving water is far harder to freeze than standing water, and it applies to the drain as much as the supply.
- Fix the slope. A drain line with a sag holds standing water permanently, and standing water is what freezes. If one fixture freezes every single winter and the others do not, the pipe has a belly in it.
